The first and best
This was the very first outing for Leslie Charteris' character and Louis Hayward was the perfect choice; he captured the Saint's outward charm and sophistication, the lethal and ruthless killer within and the genuine seeker after justice and decency. He was replaced by George Sanders for most of the rest of the films and Hugh Sinclair for the last 2. Neither were a patch on Hayward. And just as an afterthought - doesn't he bear a certain resemblance to underrated 70s Saint Ian Ogilvy?
